Notalgia paresthetica

What is notalgia paresthetica?

Notalgia Paresthetica is a sensory neuropathic syndrome of the mid back skin. Many patients of Notalgia Paresthetica also have a history of neck pain/muscle spasms, pain in between the shoulder blades, arthritis, and neck injuries.

Notalgia Paresthetica tends to be a chronic condition with periodic remissions and exacerbations. While not life-threatening and not generally associated with the appearance of multiple illnesses. Notalgia Paresthetica frequently decreases the quality of life, causing much discomfort and nuisance.

Notalgia Paresthetica is very common; however, it remains heavily under-recognized and mostly underdiagnosed.

Notalgia paresthetica symptoms:

  • Itching or pain on small patch of the back, neck, and shoulders
  • Burning in affected area
  • Tenderness in affected area
  • High/abnormal sensitivity

Research on Notalhia Paresthetica

  • Notalgia Paresthetica may present with episodic itching or pain on a small patch of the back and may involve one or both arms. This itch later forms a rash from the scratching and rubbing that inevitably ensues. After some weeks or months of scratching the same area, a pink or brown rash is seen in the mid back.
  • Researchers believe that this neuropathic itch can be caused by entrapment of spinal nerves.
